Eurovision First Listen: Arazemnieki has a “Cake To Bake” for Latvia

Latvia’s Arazemnieki is bringing more pop-folk flavor to Copenhagen with their song “Cake to Bake”. Will it rise or fall flat come Semifinal 1?

After many performances and many (many)1 interval acts, Latvia has chosen its entry for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest: Arazemnieki’s “Cake to Bake”. Similar to Malta this year, they’re bringing some pop-folk flavor. Check the song out here:

Oh boy, you guys. I’m not sure what to think of this entry. On one hand, it’s a nice little song, perfectly pleasant. The music itself, particularly the chorus, reminds me of last year’s Maltan entry, “Tomorrow”, in a good way. And then my brain starts trying to process the English lyrics, grinds to a screeching halt, and just gives up. These sound like the lyrics you set down while working on the melody of the song; I’m not sure Arazemnieki got the memo that you’re supposed to eventually replace those (or that cake is made from batter, not dough). You’re going to need to apply the Mystery Science Theater Theme Song Approach 2 to this one while it’s performed in semi-final 1.

As for the performance itself, there’s a lot of work to be done before the group hits the Copenhagen stage. The current staging seems to have been “Just hang out on stage while you perform the song.” It’ll need to be more deliberate if Latvia wants to see the final – if I was confused whether this was a competitor or an interval act in its current form, it’s got no chance with the audience come showtime.

  1. Seriously. At a certain point I lost track of which performers were actually competing and which were interval acts
  2. “Just think to yourself ‘it’s just a show, I should really just relax'”
