Eurovision 2014: Georgia — The Shin and Mariko — 3 Minutes to Earth

Rainbows! Togetherness! Outer Space! The only thing The Shin and Mariko’s Eurovision entry for Georgia doesn’t have is cohesion.

Country: Georgia
Song Title: “3 Minutes to Earth”
Artist: The Shin and Mariko
Semi-Final: Second, Position 4
Last year’s entry: “Waterfall” – Nodi Tatishvili & Sophie Gelovani (15th Place)

There seem to be a few countries whose entries always seem to be my favorites in the Eurovision song competition; Denmark and Moldova always seem to end up somewhere in my top 5 for the year1. And then there’s Georgia. I wouldn’t say I actively dislike the entries they send, but they always seem to end up towards the bottom of my list. I could barely remember last year’s entry when mentally reviewing the competition a few weeks ago. The Shin and Mariko are not improving that reputation – Mike hit the nail on the head when he called this a “college dorm jam session” and the song hasn’t improved on repeated listens:

Georgia is one of a few entries this year that I’ve had to apply what I call the Mystery Science Theater Rule2 to their lyrics. Like Latvia, I’ve read the lyrics to “3 Minutes to Earth” and now I understand it even less. There’s a lot going on here, and it seems like Georgia’s just making things up on the fly for 3 minutes straight. The lack of a song structure is not going to win may points with the judges (especially since it feels like the song doesn’t end so much as abruptly stop), and that lack of catchiness isn’t going to have televoters humming the melody as they dial their votes.

The Shin and Mariko have more than just their song’s non-Eurovisiony nature to overcome – they also have a tricky spot in the contest lineup. Performing between Norway (one of the favorites this year) and Poland (who seem poised to bring energy if not visual spectacle), this pleasant, kind of noodle-y folk jam is likely to get absolutely creamed.

Sorry, Georgia – you’re most likely to burn up on your attempt to enter the Eurovision Grand Final.
